India Holi Festival of Colors Private Tour

Local Time

Why You Should Go

Traveling to India during the vibrant Holi festival is like stepping into a kaleidoscope of color! It is one of the most celebrated holidays in Hindu culture, making it a truly special time to visit. The holiday occurs on purnima, or “full moon day” of Phalguna (the last month of the Hindu lunar calendar, next occurring March 25, 2024). Picture yourself amidst a whirlwind of laughter as rainbow-hued powders fill the air, turning streets into a surreal masterpiece. Although fun and messy(!), each color represents a deeper meaning – such as red for love and fertility and green for new beginnings. The festival itself lasts two days, the first day known as Holika Dahan or “small Holi”. On this day, as the sun dips below the horizon, the festivities only intensify as people gather around flickering bonfires for singing and dancing, intending to let go of any negative thoughts or actions from the previous year. On Holi Day, the main day of celebration, the concept of “good over evil” is observed by wearing all white and throwing gulal (colored powder) and water at one another in hopes to welcome positive energy back into one’s life. Let your inhibitions dissolve as you join the exuberant crowds, forging connections that transcend language.

During your celebrations, you’ll travel throughout the country to learn of the profound history of this land. As you visit various Hindu shrines and temples, you will have a deeper appreciation and knowledge of the many gods that represent the “good” and “evil” the Holi festival represents! We truly feel this to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will paint memories on your heart in shades of happiness!

Your morning begins bright and early with a drive to Amba Mata, within 30-minutes from your hotel. Your hike will take you into the village where you will meet with some of the resident families, see their homes, and get a unique glimpse into the life of a local. As you make you way to the various tribal villages/hamlets, you will come across the Bhil Tribe (one of the oldest indigenous tribes found in the area). Approximately halfway, enjoy a stop at Ranakpur Temples. Surrounded by the Aravalli hills, this gigantic four-facet structure was built between the late 14th to mid-15th centuries. The temple has over 1,444 marble pillars, carved in exquisite detail and no two pillars in the temple are the same. After your visit, enjoy lunch at the Mountbatten Lodge.

The second largest city in Rajasthan, Jodhpur, often referred to as “the blue city”, is known mostly for its magnificent blue plaster hues (similar to Chefchaouen in Morocco). The city is also noteworthy for its magnificent forts and palaces. Many of our clients feel the shopping in Jodhpur is among the most unique in all of India, especially for textiles (tie-dye fabrics) and antiques.

Later this evening, you will participate in the Holika Dahan ceremony at the hotel. The rituals are performed followed by the lighting of the Holika (huge bonfire representing the triumph of good over evil) as folk songs are played/sung and dances bring alive the rich heritage of Rajasthan.
