WHY YOU SHOULD GO

We think Owen Wilson’s character in the Woody Allen film, Midnight in Paris, gives a perfect summation of this romantic city: “How’s anyone ever going to come up with a book or a painting or a symphony or a sculpture that can compete with a great city [Paris]? You can’t. When you look around, every street, every boulevard is its own special art form.”

The largest island Perhaps the most culturally compelling city in all of Europe (and romantic — perfect for a honeymoon!), Paris brings together natural beauty and culture, and is among the most notable museums/art attractions in the world. Louis XIV wished to create a “place dedicated to leisure” … and we believe his dreams have been fulfilled. We feel Paris to be the most romantic and aesthetically pleasing city on the planet. Its overall cultural and artistic environment is magical. The quality of Paris museums is unmatched, including The Louvre, Versailles, Musée d’Orsay, Saint Denis Basilica, et al.

Due to the contrasts of the island versus mainland Italy, we feel Sicily is the perfect destination for visitors who have visited Italy before and wish to experience a new side of Italian culture, or simply as an exciting add-on to any Italian expedition!

Best Travel Time: Spring Summer Fall

Day 3

Paris Private Tour
Following breakfast, take a tour of some of the most notable sites in Paris. Your tour will begin with a stop at the Musée d’Orsay, one of the world’s most celebrated art museums, housing works such as Van Gogh’s Starry Night Over the Rhône and Self-Portrait, Monet’s Water Lilies, and Degas’ Little Dancer Aged Fourteen sculpture. Located in a railway station built for the 1900 World’s Fair , the museum has world-class collection of art from the Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and Art Nouveau movements.

In the afternoon, visit the iconic Catacombs of Paris! Previously an unused underground tunnel, the Catacombs became Paris’ solution to hygienic and aesthetic issues due to overflowing cemeteries in 1785. Descending 130 steps from street level, you will walk the approximately one-mile length of the tunnel, seeing bones and skulls of millions (!) of resting souls from 1785-1810.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodations: Le Meurice, Le Bristol Paris, Relais Christine, or J.K. Place Paris

Catacombs of Paris

Day 4

Paris Private Tour
Following breakfast, your full-day private tour starts at the Louvre, the world’s largest palace and (perhaps!) greatest art museum, housing such notable works of art as the Mona LisaVenus de Milo, and the Winged Victory of Samothrace. Of course, we cannot forget the breathtaking, 68 ft. glass-and-metal pyramid in the main courtyard. Located in a former royal palace along the Seine River, the Louvre’s vast collection is
divided into eight departments, showcasing works from ancient civilizations to the 19th century.

Your next stop will be the northern 17th ArrondissementMontmartre. With a strong bohemian vibe, this Parisian hilltop neighborhood is, in many ways, quintessentially French with petite cafés, serene squares, and art around every corner.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodations: Le Meurice, Le Bristol Paris, Relais Christine, or J.K. Place Paris

Montmartre

Day 5

Paris Private Tour
Following breakfast, your full-day private tour starts at La Galerie Dior, the birthplace of the Dior brand with an extensive collection of over 1,500 original pieces, including couture dresses, accessories, sketches, photographs, and archival materials. If you have an interest in fashion/art/history, La Galerie Dior is a must-see for its captivating dedication to the history, artistry, and innovation of fashion mogul Christian Dior.

In the afternoon, enjoy a stopover at the Eiffel Tower for an up-close look-see, then travel to the 15th Arrondissement and ascend to the top floor of Montparnasse Tower for the most spectacular views of Paris and the Eiffel Tower. Though we very much enjoyed the “skip the line” time-saving benefits of visiting the Eiffel Tower in the past, this special feature has become meaningless due to its exploding popularity. We now feel an elevator ride to the top of Montparnasse Tower to be much more pleasant.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodations: Le Meurice, Le Bristol Paris, Relais Christine, or J.K. Place Paris

Day 6

Versailles Excursion
Following breakfast, you will be met by your guide and privately transferred to the Palace of Versailles (an approximately one-hour drive). Versailles is beyond compare, with 700 rooms, 67 staircases, 352 chimneys, 2,153 windows, 6,300 paintings, and 2,100 sculptures and statues. Versailles has become a symbol of the absolute monarchy of the Ancien Régime. Most impressive here are the spectacular gardens, covering 1976 acres and designed by André Le Nôtre in 1661!

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodations: Le Meurice, Le Bristol Paris, Relais Christine, or J.K. Place Paris

Fountain at the Palace of Versailles

Days 7-8

Paris at Leisure
Enjoy your days in Paris at leisure with discretionary access to your private guide and driver.

Suggested visits/activities include a walk down the Rue de la Huchette, one of the oldest streets along the Rive Gauche, before continuing on to Les Invalides, a massive complex of museums and monuments related to the military history of France. In the 4th Arrondissement, Le Marais, you can explore the city’s long-established Jewish quarter (“Pletzel”) with expensive, fashionable boutiques juxtaposed to quaint Jewish stores, bookshops, and butcher shops. The Paris Sewer Museum is always exciting, located in the city’s complex, expansive tunnel system, with exhibits on the history of engineering and sanitation dating back to medieval times.

In our Paris Tips booklet, we have noted over 25 restaurant, cafe, and bakery recommendations for all of our private tours in Paris.

Upon arrival, learn about the world of Champagne at the Verzenay Lighthouse. Then, continue to a small family-run winery in an ancient wine-growing village, before reaching the village of Verzy, known for its forest of strangely twisted beech trees. Following a champagne-paired lunch at Épernay, enjoy a final wine tasting stopover at Moët & Chandon cellars, the largest in the region with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Meunier grapes. Following Champagne Region exploration, you will be privately transferred to Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa.

HOTELS

Le Meurice, one of Paris’s most iconic and luxurious palace hotels, is located on the prestigious Rue de Rivoli, directly overlooking the Tuileries Garden. This five-star property, part of the Dorchester Collection, has been a symbol of elegance and Parisian sophistication since its founding in 1835. With 160 beautifully decorated rooms and suites (comprised of 118 rooms and 42 suites), it mixes 18th-century class with modern necessities. Our favorite part of this property are the breathtaking views of the Tuileries, Eiffel Tower, or Parisian rooftops (be sure to check out the hotel’s rooftop for the best views!). We are also keen on the hotel’s prime central location in the 1st arrondissement, as it is conveniently within walking distance of some of the cities greatest sites such as the Louvre, Place Vendôme, and the Champs-Élysées. History buffs will love the historical significance, as the hotel was used as the former German military headquarters during World War II.

Dining at Le Meurice is also a highlight, as it features a two-Michelin-starred Restaurant “le Meurice Alain
Ducasse”, inspired by the lavish Salon de la Paix at Versailles, and the chic Dalí Restaurant, which offers a more relaxed yet equally refined experience (Salvador Dalí was a frequent guest, and was the inspiration for the restaurant including its design). A stay is not complete without visiting the relaxing “Spa Valmont pour Le Meurice”, which offers exceptional treatments using top of the line Swiss skincare. You can also maintain your fitness routines in the state-of-the-art 24/7 fitness center, with personal training available upon request. While the hotel does not feature a swimming pool, we feel the high-touch wellness facilities more than make up for this!

We feel that the 190-room Le Bristol (yes, the one from Midnight in Paris!) is our favorite luxury, 5-star hotel in Paris. Opened in 1925, the hotel occupies an 18th-century building near the shops of the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. We consider the airy, iconic Le Bristol to perfectly illustrate French culture and service. Though the Deluxe Suite here is our favorite, each room is individually decorated in a traditional style with Persian carpets and colorful toilets! In addition to two other notable restaurants, we especially like the hotel’s Café Antonia and Le Jardin Français restaurant. Amenities here include a high-quality, three-floor spa and fitness center, but we feel the property’s sixth-floor, nautically-themed pool opening onto a solarium to be the property’s most impressive feature!

Having visited this past year, we noticed that much has changed at the 5-star, 48-room Relais Christine since one of our first family visits in 2013! Occupying a former 16th-century abbey, in a quiet section of the trendy Saint-Germain-des-Près area of Paris’ Left Bank, the hotel is a short walk to the Seine and the Pont Neuf bridge. The property recently completed a major renovation, including rooms with updated walk-in showers, an expanded Spa Guerlain (located in the vaulted cellar), a Finnish sauna, and an exercise room. The critical thing that has not changed is the warm and inviting atmosphere and service. It is no hyperbole to say that a stay at the Relais Christine is like staying with family friends. Though usually fully booked, our favorite rooms are the Garden Suites, opening onto the private lawns enclosed by clipped hedges.

Opened in early 2020, J.K. Place Paris is located in a quiet and neighborly section of the Left Bank, hidden behind the stately facade of a former embassy on the western edge of Saint-Germain-des-Prés . Each of the property’s 29 rooms is individually unique and filled with fine art and antiques while maintaining a homey feel. Onsite there is a Sisley Spa, fitness center, indoor pool, and outpost of the Miami Italian restaurant Casa Tua, located in a glass-enclosed courtyard. Nearby there are many hotel recommended shopping spots which offer guests a feeling of being a Parisien local.
