During the Middle Ages, the residents of the low-lying bog, where presently Amsterdam stands, were forced to work together to simply survive. Overcoming differences in lifestyle and religion in favor of common interest, they built dikes to keep the sea out of the “polder” (the term used for land behind the sea).

The early social cooperation, created the Dutch word “polder model”, meaning consensus decision-making. This concept is widely regarded as the basis for Amsterdam’s tolerance and open-mindedness. Dutch writer Herman Pleij aptly remarks that “The Netherlands owes its existence to a democracy of dry feet”. The city’s progressive, forward-thinking spirit has created a cosmopolitan air that makes this small city (population only 767,000) the envy of its European neighbors.

Day 2

Amsterdam Full Day Private Tour
Lovers of this 17th century Dutch capital, you will thoroughly enjoy meandering through its distinct canals with historical sites around every corner. With your private guide, you will take to Amsterdam’s Canal Ring, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, viewing its treasured monuments and stately buildings. Winding through this historic city, your museum stopovers include the incredible Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum. Arguably, the most memorable part of your day will be to the Anne Frank House. At Prinsengracht 263, this is both a somber and sobering experience.

Free Day with Optional Half-Day Walking Tour

Holland Windmill Excursion
You will journey to Kinderdijk to explore this incomparable and innovative windmill complex that has expertly drained the surrounding land for agriculture and settlement for almost a thousand years. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, Holland’s iconic windmills of Kinderdijk are remarkable.

Day 5

Fly Amsterdam/Home

Though we also like the Waldorf Astoria and the InterContinental Amsterdam, we feel the 129-room 5-Star Conservatorium offers the best mix of quality, luxury accommodations with an outstanding location. Restored from the 19th century, stone and brick, Sweelinck Conservatory of Music, the property has Amsterdam’s ideal location: directly across the street from Museum Square (featuring the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum, and the Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art) and lush green Vondelpark (Amsterdam’s Central Park). Being Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright fans, you should enjoy the Conservatorium’s striking architecture and understated aesthetics. Amenities include a nice Akasha Spa, fully equipped gym, lap pool, and two restaurants. We really like the city views from the one bedroom suites!
