Iceland Nature Immersion Tour

Local Time

Why You Should Go

It’s no hyperbole to state that Iceland is among the most truly otherworldly places in the world! The tiny country’s contrasts in nature, topography, and outdoor activities make this an idyllic private tour/trekking destination. Based on the unprecedented rise in Iceland’s tourism, particularly during the peak June – August season, you must book 9 months – 1 year in advance in order to the secure the highest quality guides, hotels, and trek (lux!) permits.

Though we are big fans of the Laugavegur Trek (among the most beautiful hikes in the world, including “lux” camping), this adventure can be quite taxing, and we look forward to a little more comfort and day hikes. Days spent Inside a Volcano or at the Blue Lagoon are welcome by evenings at luxury resorts such as the 5-Star Deplar Farm and Hotel Borg.

Gullfoss, which means “golden falls”, powerfully flows over a three-step staircase before plunging down 105 feet in two stages, into a crevice. Visitors are allowed to get as close as they brave in order to feel the power of Gullfoss.

At base camp, your glacier guide will make sure you are properly attired – crampons, ice axes, and a harness – before setting out on your hike where you will learn to distinguish all the different features of this glacier, such as water cauldrons, crevasses, ridges, and waterways.

Day 9

Drive Back to Reykjavik
On your way back to Reykjavik, you will have the unique opportunity to visit a private island, owned by one man who used to spend his summers here growing up and now is turning this land into a sustainable and eco-friendly space. All electricity here is generated by a windmill on the island, and most of the food, particularly fresh herbs and vegetables, is grown right here. Here you will get to try your hand at the traditional Icelandic way of catching salmon from the river using a net, before sitting down to a delicious three-course meal by a bonfire.

Hotels

We feel the 99-room, 1930s style Hotel Borg has perhaps the best location among all the high-quality hotels in Reykjavik. Overlooking Austurvollur Square, on the edge of a small park, Hotel Borg provides the perfect location for nice walks in the center of the city. As is the case with all Reykjavik designated 5-Star hotels, we feel Hotel Borg is more of an upper 4-Star type property when comparing to American luxury standards. Nevertheless, recent clients were impressed with the hotel’s art deco, somewhat Spartan design, with updated, contemporary style rooms, all with the usual amenities including Wi-Fi, satellite TV, and bathrooms with heated marble floors (!). Hotel Borg includes a restaurant and a nice-sized spa and small gym.

Located in the country’s remote, north Troll Peninsula, the 2016-opened Deplar Farm has quickly become Iceland’s most sought-after luxury adventure lodge. The turf-roofed barns at Deplar’s entrance area belie the lodge’s luxury accommodation inside. With just 12 suites, Deplar offers an all-inclusive adventure travel experience, including many idyllic hikes, fly-fishing, mountain biking, whale watching, horse-back riding (on those unique small “Viking” horses), et.al. The many high-touch amenities include a sleek spa with indoor-outdoor saltwater pool, well-equipped gym, kid’s game room and outstanding farm to table dining. With all the seafood here being locally caught, this is certainly a fish-lovers dream. A family client who stayed here last August was especially enamored with the restaurant’s freshly-baked bread and unique Icelandic pancakes. Two outdoor guided activities included each day, though Heli-adventure excursions are an extra charge. Please note that Deplar Farms has amongst the highest quality naturalist guides in the country.
